Title: Doing Translation Research Ethnographically: Insights from Fieldwork and Research Practice
Abstract
This talk offers methodological insights into the use of ethnographic research within Translation Studies. It begins with an overview of ethnography and its core concepts, outlining how this qualitative approach enables researchers to capture the lived realities of translators, interpreters, and other agents involved in translatorial contexts. I will then discuss how ethnographic methods entered TS by examining seminal studies that shaped the field and highlighting the unique contributions and challenges associated with such approaches. Building on this foundation, I will show how I have applied ethnographic and autoethnographic methods in my own research, offering concrete examples from fieldwork and research practice. Collectively, these insights demonstrate how doing translation research ethnographically can enrich our understanding of translation as a situated, socially embedded activity.
Bionote
Claudine Borg is a tenured lecturer and head of the Department of Translation, Terminology and Interpreting Studies at the University of Malta. She teaches in the Master in Translation and Terminology Studies where she introduced, designed, and delivers several modules including one on Research Methodologies in Translation Studies. She received her PhD in Translation Studies from Aston University, Birmingham in 2017. Her research interests lie primarily in cognitive translation studies and literary translation with a particular focus on research methodology, translation revision, and translator studies. She has presented her work at various local and international conferences, and published several scholarly works, among them A Literary Translation in the Making. A process-oriented perspective (2022, Routledge). She is also a published literary translator, member of the TREC network, and of the Executive Board of the European Society for Translation Studies (EST).
