The Translation History Summer School, hosted by the Department of Translation Studies at the University of Graz for the third time, took place from 3 to 6 June 2025. It focused on the theme “Digitizing Translation History: Methods, Tools, and Approaches” and was designed for PhD candidates working on historical aspects of translation and interpreting.
The local organising team comprised Dr. Hanna Blum, Prof. Pekka Kujamäki, and Dr. Christina Korak, PhD students Sascha Essl and Christina Mariella Fritz, as well as Margit Jandrisits and Andrea Penz from the administrative staff. Student assistants Barbara Wedl, Emma Steinbock, and Laura Piechulik supported the on-site organisation and helped ensure smooth proceedings throughout the week. The summer school welcomed three visiting scholars: Diana Roig Sanz (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), Elisabet Carbó-Catalan (Université de Liège), and Bernhard Bauer (Department of Digital Humanities, University of Graz). In addition, local researchers, including Pekka Kujamäki, Hanna Blum, and Christina Korak, contributed their expertise to the programme.
The summer school was attended by 14 PhD researchers and two post-docs from universities ten countries across two continents. The participants represented diverse academic backgrounds including Translation Studies, Literary and Cultural Studies, Social and Cultural Anthropology, and Central Asian Studies.
The programme opened with short participant presentations based on pre-prepared posters introducing their PhD theses or current research projects. Each presentation was followed by a brief discussion, giving fellow participants and senior researchers, including Pekka Kujamäki, Christina Korak, Hanna Blum, Elisabet Carbó-Catalan and Diana Roig Sanz, the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas.
