The local organisers were Ceyda Elgül Erdem, Zeynep Kürük Erçetin, Fazilet Akdoğan Özdemir and Jonathan M. Ross, all from the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at Boğaziçi University. As in previous years, the school was organised in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), the University of Turku (Finland), the University of Tampere (Finland), and the University of Granada (Spain), with the generous support of the International Doctorate in Translation Studies (ID-TS).
The 2025 edition of the Summer School was titled DOTTSS-Bosphorus, in reference to the body of water running through the city of Istanbul, separating and connecting continents, cultures and traditions. DOTTSS-Bosphorus brought together doctoral students, early career researchers, and leading scholars in the field of Translation Studies. A total of 13 participants from 10 universities and 7 countries (Austria, India, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Türkiye, and United Arab Emirates.) attended the school. Four participants came from ID-TS member institutions.
The 2025 Visiting Professor was Prof. Jorge Díaz Cintas from University College London (United Kingdom), who also gave a public lecture in hybrid mode. In addition to following his lecture series on various aspects of Audio-Visual Translation, the participants attended lectures, workshops and tutorials given by 18 teachers, all of whom work at institutions affiliated with the ID-TS: Nike K. Pokorn and Tamara Mikolič Južnič (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia); Outi Paloposki (University of Turku, Finland); Kaisa Koskinen, Sari Hokkanen, and Mikhail Mikhailov (University of Tampere, Finland); Dorothy Kelly (University of Granada, Spain); Şehnaz Tahir Gürçağlar, Özlem Berk Albachten, Ebru Diriker, Mehmet Şahin, Şule Demirkol Ertürk, Jonathan Ross, Sema Üstün Külünk, Fazilet Akdoğan Özdemir, Ceyda Elgül Erdem, Zeynep Kürük Erçetin, and Hüseyin Mergan (Boğaziçi University, Türkiye). Participants at DOTTSS-Bosphorus were also treated to a presentation by Boğaziçi University faculty and students on TermQuake, a termbase application designed for crisis situations and created through crowdsourcing in the midst of the 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquakes.
The programme consisted of lectures, seminars, and workshops on translation theory, various methodological approaches, and teacher training, as well as thematic sessions by the visiting professor, individual tutorials, and a graduate conference.
The evaluation of the School by the participants suggests a high level of satisfaction with the organisation and content of the programme. Below are some of their comments:
Regarding the tutorials: “The tutorials were truly inspiring”; “Most of the tutorials were very helpful”; “Even though some of the fields of professors did not fit in our projects, they provided the best approaches and recommendations to us”.
Regarding the guest professor’s lectures: “I particularly enjoyed the lectures by the professor Diaz-Cintas and the hands-on approach in the subtitling workshop”. “These kinds of tutorials could be extended to other tools for data preparation as well as qualitative and quantitative analysis”; “I really enjoyed those, both in terms of content (even though this is not my area of research) and in terms of presentation style”.
Regarding the teacher training component: “The discussions and presentations were incredibly useful”; “I enjoyed the lectures on curriculum design and assessment. I’d like to hear more about the practical aspects of teaching (source text choice, text analysis, translation tasks, and so on)”.
Regarding the methodology and research component: “Very concrete and necessary”; “very useful, good mix”.
